Polk County Early College is located in Columbus, North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The Early College program began in the fall of 2007 and was a project of North Carolina Governor, Mike Easley. The college was the first virtual early college in the state, and it is partially funded by the Bill and MeLinda Gates Foundation. We now have live classes as well as the virtual classes.
The Polk County Early College is a Learn and Earn School in which students earn college credits while in high school. The Early College is a partner with Isothermal Community College and with the North Carolina Virtual Public School. We started in a small classroom at Polk County High with a few students but we have grown and have moved into our own building that includes a main area for students cubicles, classrooms and a science lab.
